Anthony Oberman painted landscapes, stable interiors and genre scenes with cattle and other animals in the early decades of the 19th century. The way he painted horses in particular was very popular with Amsterdam collectors. For example, he made portraits of two trotters on behalf of the owner, banker Adriaan van der Hoop, now owned by the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Around 1828, when the artist was almost 40 years old, he started painting flower and fruit pieces. In later years he would increasingly specialize in this.
